How to use the monitor test

  1. Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth so dust and smudges do not look like defects.
  2. Press Start tests, then Fullscreen, so the test covers every pixel including the edges.
  3. Step through the five solid colors and look for dots that do not match the background. Use the gradients to spot backlight bleed and banding, the checkerboard for sharpness, and the burn-in sweep for residual images.
  4. Press Esc to exit. Note the position of any dead or stuck pixel, then check your manufacturer's pixel policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel stays black on every color because its subpixels no longer receive power. A stuck pixel stays lit in red, green, or blue because one subpixel is stuck on. Run the solid color screens to tell them apart: a dot that is black on the white screen is dead, a dot that glows in one color is stuck.

Can dead pixels be fixed?

No. A dead pixel is a hardware failure and no software can repair it. Some stuck pixels recover after the rapid color changes of a burn-in sweep, but that is not guaranteed. Whether a dead pixel qualifies for a warranty replacement depends on the manufacturer's pixel policy, so check it before requesting service.
