How to use the mic test
- Click Start mic test and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Speak at your normal volume and watch the input level bar. Green means the level is in the good range; red means back off a little.
- Pick a different microphone from the input device dropdown if you have more than one. The test restarts on the device you pick.
- Put on headphones, click Hear yourself, and talk. You should hear your own voice without delay or distortion.
Frequently asked questions
Is my audio uploaded or stored?
No. The test processes your microphone signal locally in the browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing is recorded, uploaded, or stored, and the microphone stream stops when you press Stop or leave the page.
Why do I hear an echo when I use Hear yourself?
Hear yourself routes your microphone straight to your output. When the sound comes out of speakers instead of headphones, the microphone picks it up again and you hear an echo. Wear headphones, turn your speaker volume down, or switch the playback off.
What does the level meter show?
The loudness of the signal your microphone sends, updated many times a second. It is computed from the root mean square of the microphone waveform and scaled from 0 to 100 percent. At 30 percent and below the meter reads too quiet, from 30 to 85 percent it reads good, and above 85 percent it reads too loud.
Which browsers work?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all support the browser APIs the test uses. The page must be open on HTTPS or localhost, because browsers block microphone access on insecure addresses. On iPhone and iPad, press Hear yourself to start playback; iOS blocks sound that starts without a tap.
