Work out your course grade from weighted categories, then find the score you need on the final to reach a target grade.
How to use it
- Open the Weighted grade tab and add one row for each graded category in your syllabus: homework, labs, midterm, final.
- Enter the average score in each category and its weight as a percentage. The weights must come to exactly 100; the tool checks the total as you type and tells you the current sum.
- Read the overall grade and letter below the rows, with each category's contribution in points.
- Open the Final exam target tab, enter your current grade, the final's weight, and the grade you want. The tool shows the score you need on the final, or tells you when the grade is out of reach.
How the weighted grade is calculated
Each category contributes its average score times its weight as a percentage. Homework at 92 with a 30% weight adds 27.6 points to the course grade; the total out of 100 is the sum of every category's contribution. The weights act as a fixed budget, which is why they must add up to 100 before the tool computes anything.
The final exam target solves the same weighted average in reverse. It takes your grade so far, the weight of the remaining work, and the grade you want, then reports the exact average the remaining work needs. When that number goes over 100, the target grade cannot be reached and the tool says so instead of hiding it.
Frequently asked questions
Is my course weighted or points-based?
Weighted courses give each category a percentage of the final grade, like homework 30%, midterm 30%, final 40%. Points-based courses just add up the points you earned out of the points possible. If your syllabus shows a percentage next to each category, use the Weighted grade tab on this page.
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
The calculator requires exactly 100 and will not estimate the rest. If coursework is still ungraded, its weight is not yet earned, and guessing it would produce a number that looks precise but is not. Fold the missing weight into the right category once it is graded, or come back when every category has a score.
How does the final exam target work?
It solves the weighted average for the final's score: required = (desired - current x weight / 100) / (1 - weight / 100). For example, with an 80 average and a final worth 25%, a 90 for the course works out to 93.3 on the final. A result of 0 or less means the grade is already secured. A result above 100 means no score on the final can reach the target.
What letter scale does the tool use?
A plain scale with no plus or minus grades: A is 90 to 100, B is 80 to 89.99, C is 70 to 79.99, D is 60 to 69.99, and F is below 60. Many schools use a different scale, so check your handbook before acting on the letter.
Do my scores get uploaded anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your scores never leave the page, and nothing is stored after you close it.
